Draw 20 Faces
In seminar we were asked to draw 20 identical faces and give them hair, this is what I made.
When asked to select a picture of hair we liked, I chose the model in the J brand ad posted above. When asked what I liked or disliked about it her hair I described how I like the length and shape of her hair but disliked the color of it. Although I think its a nice color, and suits the model nicely, I love black hair and wish I had black hair myself.
The picture posted above is what I created during seminar today. It is composed of random lines and swirls accompanied by words that I thought of in regards to hair.
This seminar made me realize a number of things. The first was that I really do love my hair and it acts a security blanket, I do not think I would feel attractive without it. The second thing I realized was the politics involved with hair. I never thought of people coloring or straightening their hair as anything more than a form of self expression. The movie trailer for Chris Rock's "Good Hair" created a whole new perspective on the politics we have created for something to natural to us. I discussed this topic with a friend, and said, "I keep my hair natural now, (natural meaning, I do not color or style my hair), if I were a black woman, I would not chemically straighten my hair or get a weave". My friend disagreed with me and brought attention to the ideas we have surrounding beautiful hair are not just our own, but cultural. She made me realize, I could never know exactly how these marginalized women feel.
