Guest Speaker: Karen Lefave
Karen was a guest speaker in seminar on January 4th 2012. She presented us with a synopses of her life, from childhood to present day. She spoke of how the passions you find in childhood will always find a way to reappear in adulthood. She shared that she was always interested in the arts and dreamed of being a ballerina but because of her parent''s influences she became an engineer, like her father. Now as an adult she has revisited her love of the arts and has dabbled in fashion and book writing.Karen also taught us about something called "the glass ceiling" and "COW"s. The glass ceiling was a way of visualizing the limitations placed on women in the work place. How they are told they have be whatever they want, but the reality is that limitations are in place and the highest, most prestigious positions are dominated by men. A "COW" was term she used that was more commonly used in the 1980's referring to a career oriented woman. She explained that when she was entering the work force there was this notion that women had to make a choice between careers and being mothers. Women with children were not given fair opportunity in the work place and she personally experienced this with the arrival of her first child.
Nemecene The Epoch of Redress
Karen was kind enough to give our entire seminar a personalized signed copy of her novel. She mentioned that it is the first of a trilogy that she is currently working on. I look forward to reading my copy over the summer break.
