An Introduction to Hesoid's Works and Days - Bartlett
In ancient Greek Mythology, the existence of Pandora is the cause of evil and suffering in the World. Zeus promises “great woe for yourself and for men to come in the form of Pandora”. Zeus created Pandora as a way to punish Prometheus. The existence of women leads to the mortality of men; before the creation of women there was no procreation, and in turn, no definitive birth or death.
The Pandora story suggests a new found awareness of mortality, and crated a hope of existence elsewhere after death, like the underworld or a variation of heaven. The Biblical story of Eve and the Garden of Eden follows the same premise as that of Pandora. In both cases it is women that are blamed for a painful mortal experience. They also like Helene of Troy, are all made to be deviant and the cause of violence and war.
